Starting Questions:
James, we just did a very broad overview of everything you’ve done over the past 40 years, what have you been passionate about in 2018, and what are you looking forward to next year?
I want to talk about one of your books, “Cracking the Metabolic Code”…you talk about healing things like cancer, diabetes, and depression in a really natural way, with 9 Keys to Optimal Health, can you tell us a little about this and maybe share a couple of the keys?
I’ve heard you talk some about fasting, and you talk about how you recommend eating within a certain schedule for several days per week, then at least two days per week you do a longer fast. What is your personal fasting schedule, and what do you say to people who ask what the ideal fasting schedule would be?
You’ve also mentioned the Fasting Mimicking diet, which we talked about with a different guest a couple weeks ago. Can you expand on what you recommend as the Fasting Mimicking Diet, and explain again how it works?
Before I get started on listener questions, I always like to ask my guests, what did you eat yesterday? Walk us through a day in your life?
Listener Questions:
Q1 - 22:05
I recently had some blood work done to see why I wasn’t feeling normal and my Doctor told me that my blood work showed some Hepatitis B. She said that the Hepatitis B is not active currently, but that it was active in my system at one point. I am trying to figure out what caused this. How recent would I have to have had it in order for it to appear in my blood work? And what are some of the most common foods that cause it? Could this be part of the reason I don’t feel my liver is functioning correctly, even though it apparently is no longer active?
-Angela in Northern Va
Q2 - 24:05
I’ve always considered myself a hot natured person, even If everyone else around me is comfortable, I am usually hot and clammy. One of my best friends is the complete opposite, she is ALWAYS cold. Is this just the way we were wired, or is being way too hot or way too cold a sign of something deeper? We are both in our 30’s and to our knowledge, don’t have any major health issues. Should we look into this?
* Pati in Greenville
Q3 - 25:29
I have two questions. I am relatively new to fasting, and I'm breaking out with a rash and I did some research. Supposedly it is because of the less income of caloric intake. Please tell me if this is temporary or are there steps ill need to take? I decided to just "take a break" for a few days. This rash hurts.
Also, When I am in my fasting window, does a splash of lemon in my water break my fast?
-Rosario
Q4 - 27:26
My father had Type 2 Diabetes, and I watched him experiment with every medication, blood thinners, insulin, anything that his Doctor said would help. I am 25 now and pay really close attention to my health and my blood sugar. Apparently, everything looks good now, but I know it can be hereditary. I don’t want to be a slave to medicine like my dad was. What are some things I can start doing now that are preventative, and if I do become diabetic, what is the best way to treat Type 2 naturally?
* Brian in Alabama
Q5 - 33:55
I have been doing Intermittent Fasting for about 3-4 months and have been doing great, trying to eat clean, while allowing myself the occasional splurge so I am not deprived. However, the past few weeks have been so hard for me! I always get so stressed around Christmas time, between holiday events, budgeting for all of the gifts, family drama, it is really affecting me this year especially. Some people starve themselves when they are stressed, but I tend to overeat. I don’t want to spend my whole December like this, and carry it into the winter, which is always a blue time for me. Do you have any advice?
-Anonymous
Q6 - 36:39
My bloodwork came back showing that I have very low Vitamin D. I wasn’t surprised considering this is called the Sunshine Vitamin, and it is cold and December! I never thought of Vitamin D as being super important or talked about, what are some of the functions that are affected by it? And since it’s not realistic for me to lay in the sun, what are the best sources for me to increase my Vitamin D levels naturally? Do you recommend tanning beds or red light therapy?

Through his practice and his New York Times Best Selling books, Dr. Joel Fuhrman has helped thousands of people lose weight permanently and reverse chronic disease. You may recognize him from the Dr Oz show, where he is a frequent member of the medical advisory board. Not only is he is an expert on nutrition and national healing, but he is quite the athlete! He actually placed third in the 1976 World Professional Pairs Skating Championship, I can definitely say this is the first time we’ve had a professional figure skater on the show! It is such an honor to have him here with us today.

STARTER QUESTIONS
- You’ve been doing this for 25 years, how did you get started in the world of medicine and nutrition? What are some of the biggest changed you’ve seen in the general public’s perception and mindset over the 25 years?
- You talk a lot about the Nutritarian Diet, and even created a food pyramid for it which I think is incredible, it looks very different from the classic food pyramid. It’s all about eating foods that have a high proportion of nutrients to calories. What are some of your favorite foods that fit this proportion? Are there any foods that you think we’d be surprised to hear make the list, or foods that are on your best or worst list?
- Your latest book is called “The End of Dieting” and I just LOVE this title and this concept, because I think fad diets are the worst! Tell us a little more about the book?
- In the book, you talk about food addicts, how can someone know if they are a food addict, and what are some of the things you recommend to them?
- You wrote a book called “Fasting and Eating for Health”, before Intermittent Fasting became widely known. What are some of the conditions you’ve seen healed or improved over your career by fasting? Personally, what is your typical eating and fasting schedule?
- Before we get to listener questions, I want to tell everyone that they have got to check out your website because there are so many resources, you have a shop with member deals, a Vitamin Advisor, tons of recipes, and of course info about all your books and your events. It’s drfurman.com.
- I know you are really passionate about your Eat to Live retreat, I saw your brochure for it and it looks INCREDIBLE! Tell our listeners all about it, and your other retreats, which are all over the world!.
Listener Questions
Q1 - 29:23
My Doctor told me that my cholesterol is not ideal. He is trying to get me to take a medication, but I want that to be the last resort, I want to try to lower my cholesterol naturally first. I am 50 years old, and I am in my ideal weight range. What can I do to attempt to lower this without medication?
* Jeff in Florida
Q2 - 31:05
I suffer from psoriasis, which has always been uncomfortable for me, but I am really freaking out now because I am getting married in six months. It is worst on my face and is very noticeable. Probably like everyone who suffers, my flare-ups seem to be completely unpredictable, which of course means there is a chance I could flare up on my wedding day- especially because I will most likely be stressed. Is there anything I can do to help control/prevent a possible flare-up on that day? I will try LITERALLY anything!!!!!!
* Kim in Baltimore
Q3 - 34:44
Thanks to your encouragement, I just finished a 5-day water fast about a week ago! Unfortunately, I felt like total crap for the last three days, it was almost unbearable. The good news is that since I finished the fast, I have noticed a lot of improvement in my joint pain that I deal with every day, and I think psoriasis in my forehead is clearing up. To me, that makes the fast worth it, and I do want to try again. Do you have any tips to make the water fast a little more bearable? And what amount of time do you recommend water fasting, what would be the shortest amount of time I could fast to see these benefits, and what is the longest amount of time that you recommend water fasting?
* -Parker in Virginia Beach
Q4 - 36:17 I asked my local farmer's market if indeed their produce is organic...they said no. But isn't all farmer's market produce organic due to the fact the produce is picked and brought straight to the market?
-Rosario
Q5 - 37:22 My daughters both do the Keto diet and have a lot of success with it, they are always bugging me to jump on the bandwagon. My hesitation is that I had my gallbladder removed a couple years ago and when I did, my doctor told me to avoid fatty foods. From my understanding of the Keto diet, for it to be successful, you have to eat a lot of healthy fats, which concerns me. What do you recommend for people who are interested in this diet but have no gallbladder? I am worried if I try the low carb without high fats that I will be hungry all the time and won’t see the results.
* Patty in Tennessee
Q6 - 39:39
I have a lingering cold/cough that won’t go away. I’ve had it for almost a month now! I’ve tried Vitamin C, Echinacea, all kinds of Essential Oils, basically every natural remedy I can think of, and nothing is working! I’ve hesitated to go to the Doctor because I don’t want to take an antibiotic. How do I know when it is time to go? Do you have any other natural remedy recommendations that I should try?

She’s transformed thousands of lives through fitness and healthy lifestyle changes, and it is an honor to have her on today’s show, please welcome Jill Brown!

Listen on YouTube: https://youtu.be/1JRBnAyAaOk
STARTER QUESTIONS:
- Tell us about yourself, how and when did you develop a passion for fitness, and helping others meet their goals?
- Before we move to listener questions, I always like to ask our guests what they eat. This podcast started off talking about Intermittent Fasting, which I know that you are a fan of. What kind of eating pattern do you follow, and what kinds of foods do you eat? Are there any foods/food groups that you eliminate or limit while in your eating window?
- A LOT of people in the fitness industry talk about eating a ton of small meals throughout the day, cramming food in when you aren’t really hungry, what do you say to these people in regards to fasting?
LISTENER QUESTIONS:
Q1 - 12:19
I HATE, HATE, HATE cardio! I’ve tried everything, downloading podcasts, watching TV shows, anything to pass time on the treadmill or elliptical and am just bored out of my mind. I’m not really a group exercise person either. I really love lifting weights and strength training, but everyone says I need to get that cardio in. What are some good forms of exercise to get my heart rate up that don’t involve 30 min on a piece of cardio equipment?
- Cassie in Kentucky
Q2 - 16:26
A couple episodes back, your guest briefly mentioned the Fasting Mimicking Diet, which was brand new to me. I thought it was an odd concept because the whole benefit of fasting seems to be depriving your body of food to give your digestive system time to rest, and your body time to heal. Can you talk more about how this works, and is there a certain system that you purchase or follow?
- Serena in Virginia Beach
Q3 - 21:41
I have Arthritis in one of my knees, and my doctor told me that walking on an incline is one of the worst exercises I can do for it, which I always loved to do because it makes a difference in my butt and legs. Squats and lunges with weights can be painful, and I just hate pushing it, because my knee hurts so bad the next day. I do enjoy spin classes, which don’t bother my knee, but because of my schedule and the schedule at my gym, I can’t do this every day. What are some other workouts that are really good for shaping my legs and butt but don’t put so much strain on the knee? And how do I find the balance of pushing through the pain and listening to my body?
-Alice in Greenville
Q4 - 24:29
I am going to Europe for 3 weeks, which is a real dream come true! I know that we will be doing a LOT of eating, and drinking. I figure this is a once in a life time opportunity, and I want to experience it all, but I also don’t want to come home 20 lbs heavier lol! We are crashing at a couple Air BnBs, so I don’t have the option of a hotel gym. In addition to the walking around we will be doing, what are some simple exercises/routines that I can do with minimal equipment?
-Melissa in Northern VA
Q5 - 27:05
Recently I’ve had some severe pain in my left shoulder. It came after an intense upper body day. I’ve gone to the orthopedist before for something similar, but with my knee, they said that I should rest, listen to my body, not overdo it, etc. I didn’t want to pay to go to the Doctor to hear the same thing about my shoulder, so I’ve put it off. My question is how can I tell the difference in soreness, and something being wrong? How long should I wait to go? I am 40, so nothing works quite like it used to, and I don’t want to run to the Doc every time I have an ache. Also, I would love your input on general soreness. I once had a trainer tell me that in order to build muscle, I need to be sore. Sometimes, after an intense leg day, I am so sore I can hardly walk, and I feel my legs buckling. Is it true that I need to get this sore in order for my workouts to be effective? Finally, what are your tips for sore muscle relief?
-Tara in Pittsburg
Q6 - 29:39
I am a really busy working mom…my husband travels for work and is gone 75% of the time, and between sports, after school program, and lack of childcare, the only real time I can get to workout is an evening, when I go for a power walk and bring my kids with me on their bikes. I enjoy this because we are spending time together and I am burning some calories, but I want to kick it up a notch. What can I do to intensify these walks a bit?

Today’s guest is the host of the “Life Fueled by Faith” a health and weight loss podcast for Christian women, which I absolutely love to listen to! She’s a certified health and weight loss coach and is making a huge impact on so many women through her courses and coaching. It’s an honor to have her on the show, please welcome Jessie Conley!
Jesse Connley's Website: https://www.jessieconley.com/
Listen on YouTube: https://youtu.be/SQDbBAidECY
STARTER QUESTIONS:
- Tell us a little about yourself and how you became so passionate about helping other women, I know that everything changed for you when you had your children, as it did for me. A lot of women can relate to that!
- You are a big advocate for intermittent fasting, what is your daily eating schedule like?
- What kinds of foods do you eat, is there anything that is off limits for you?
- You are really outspoken about your faith, which I really respect! How has your relationship with God impacted your view of yourself, your body, and diet and exercise?
- Before we get to listener questions, tell us about some of the courses you offer, I know you offer one about emotional eating, and about intermittent fasting, what else do you provide?
LISTENER QUESTIONS:
Q1 - 16:18
I have a four-year-old daughter and recently gave birth to a son about 6 months ago. When I had my daughter, I was in my 20s and the weight literally fell off, but I am 31 now and it is completely different. I’ve tried cutting out sugar and carbs, but even that isn’t working. I hear you talking a lot about Intermittent Fasting on the podcast and want to try it, but I see a lot of mixed reviews for moms that are breastfeeding. What is your opinion on IF and breastfeeding?
-Mary in Dayton
Q2 - 19:46
You’ve mentioned before that one of the benefits of Intermittent Fasting is less meal prep- which I absolutely love! I typically eat one meal a day, which is dinner. By the time I get off work and pick up my kids from daycare, it’s almost 6 pm and I really don’t feel like cooking! But it is so important to me that my family sits down and eats dinner together like I did when I was growing up. Do you have any good meal prep tips to share so that I spend less time in the kitchen in the evening, but don’t settle for unhealthy, convenient foods?
-Jamie in Pittsburg
Q3 - 24:12
I loved your podcast about emotional eating! I took your online quiz and determined that I am a stress eater, which didn’t surprise me one bit. I love to go through the drive-through at the end of a stressful day. I have been really mindful about finding other outlets for my stress, and have been doing a lot better. The area I still struggle with is my bored eating, mostly at night when I am hanging out at home. I just can’t stop grazing! Do you have any tips to help with this?
-Ashley in Northern Virginia
Q4 - 30:06
I am really frustrated because I have been working out with a trainer 3x a week for the past two months, and am not seeing results. The first month, I didn’t lose any weight but I was kind of prepared for that because I heard it was normal. However, I just had my month 2 weigh in and the scale has only budged a pound! Do you think I am not doing the right kinds of exercises with my trainer? What kind of exercise do you recommend? As for my eating, I am sticking to a 6-hour eating window each day, and trying to stay under 1600 calories. Am I eating too much in my window? HELP!
* Jennifer in Louisiana
Q5 - 33:32
I’ve been married for about a year now. As soon as I got married I determined that I was not going to be that person who let herself go once she landed a guy! Around that time I started Intermittent Fasting. Most days I eat in about a 6-hour window, sometimes I eat One Meal A Day. This sounds weird, but I’ve noticed lately it is taking a toll on my relationship! My husband works crazy hours, and our time to connect is in the evenings. One of our favorite things to do is go out and have dinner, or make something really yummy at home and enjoys it together with wine. Typically, this didn’t happen till 8 or 9. Now that I am limiting my eating window, I can’t do this anymore…esp on days I eat one meal a day, there’s no way in heck I can wait til 8p. My husband mentioned the other day that he misses this. I love fasting and don’t want to sacrifice my health but I also don’t want my marriage to suffer. What do you recommend?

Listener Questions:
Q1 - 17:57
Q: I loved your podcast with Dr. Eric Z, and I ordered all of his favorite essential oils- Clove, Peppermint, Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit, and Lavender. Since I got them, they’ve been sitting on my desk! I had really good intentions but just don’t know how to get started using them consistently! How should I be using these? The main issues I struggle with are the side effects that come along with my thyroid issues- exhaustion, constipation, cold all the time, brittle nails/hair, etc. How should I use these oils?
- Kristy in Indiana
Q2 - 24:27
Q: I know that standard deodorant with antiperspirant can be really harmful, especially for women when it comes to breast health. I have tried to switch to a natural blend I found at Whole foods and I just haven’t been able to do it! Now that the weather has cooled down for the winter, I want to try again. You’ve talked before about one that you use from TJ Max, but I can’t remember what it was called? Could you talk about some of your favorite all natural brands for deodorant and skin care?
- Tamara in Sacramento
Q3 - 28:32
Q: I ordered a Mitochondria Detox after a recent podcast, and I was really excited to start it! Around day 3-4 I became violently ill, I threw up 15 times over the period of two days. I don’t usually get sick to my stomach like this, and no one else around me had a stomach bug. It didn’t even occur to me until a few days ago that maybe it was the Detox that was making me sick. Do you think my body was rejecting the detox products themselves, or that this was my body getting rid of the junk? Or do you think this was just a coincidence?
- Michelle in New York
Q4 - 31:15
Q: My husband and I wrote an offer on a home and held a termite/mold inspection. The inspection came back that there are some mold spores, but they aren’t black. My agent told me that not all mold is dangerous, that I don’t have anything to worry about with this particular type. What I am reading online seems to say that toxic molds are usually black. I got spooked and we walked away from the house, but now I am curious about this as we continue our home search. What should I be concerned with, and what should I treat and overlook?
- Elizabeth in Greenville
Q5 - 33:26
Q: An article that I read recently talked about taking natural binders to assist with detox. I was surprised to learn some semi-common things like cilantro can act as a binder! I also have read a lot about activated charcoal, which I have bought at Whole Foods before to help with hangovers. What are some of the best, non-prescription binders that you recommend, and do you recommend any of the prescription ones?
-Amy in Virginia Beach
Q6 - 37:21
Q: I just got diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, I tried with my diet for 2 years. I eat lots of healthy fats, eggs, avocado, and a keto diet. After 2 years of just trying with my diet, I finally decided to get on prescription meds for my rheumatoid arthritis. I'm now regretting the decision. Why do you think I couldn't keep this under control with my diet and do you maybe think my diet wasn't clean enough??

Q: I just got back from France, and before I went one of my friends said to me "If you go to France you can eat all the foods that you cant here". When I'm here in American, I can't eat beer, ice cream, or bread and if I do I break out in psoriasis all over my body, but she was right. When I was in France I ate all the dairy, the beer, and the bread I wanted and I had no psoriasis. As soon as I came back and tried to eat a little bit here and broke out. What is the deal??

With the symptoms I am having, it seems like something is wrong with my liver, gallbladder, or bile secretion. How can I be sure? Is there a way to tell if my bile is normal?

Q: Because of the research I’ve done, I have completely removed Gluten from my diet because of my autoimmune issues, but I am really struggling to give up dairy. Everyone I talk to says that it will really help me, but I just LOVE my cheese. Is there a way to tell if I am specifically allergic to dairy? If I was, what would my symptoms be?
-Angela in Pigeon Forge

Q: Greetings! My name is Lee-Anne from South Africa and I love your podcast - it's a wealth of information and I enthusiastically look forward to each one...My question involves Sole, pronounced Soh-ley. I'm pretty sure you might have heard of it before, but if not, it's a mixture of distilled water that's been fully saturated with Pink Himalayan Salt. I fast with Sole and add it to my water all day long. Personally, I drink loads of water during the day, as it helps me get through my fast and avoid headaches. Whenever I struggle with the fast, drinking Sole magically makes it easier to fast for a couple of hours more. Its extremely comforting to me, like hot chocolate on a rainy day...and my brain seems to strangely associate this with warm soup?? In total, I add about 3 tablespoons of Sole to my water per day. I doubt it breaks the fast as it takes my hunger away - but I'm wondering what the effects of it may be on other benefits of fasting such as Autophagy?

Q: I’ve been taking a parasite to cleanse, and every time I go to the bathroom, I check my stool to see if I see anything worm-like, and I don’…everything looks normal. Does this mean I don’t have parasites and I could quit? When I do these cleanses, they just don’t make me feel good. Should I see a Doctor for a stool sample? I don’t want to put my body through these side effects of the cleanses if it’s not necessary.

Q: To make a long story short, I was recently diagnosed with MS, about 3 months ago. I am only 29 and this was really upsetting for me, because I felt my whole life was over. My Doctor has been experimenting with different medicines, and the side effects have been horrible, I feel like I am on a roller coaster. It is daunting to me to think that I may have to be on medication for the rest of my life, but I want to do anything I can to keep the symptoms at bay and keep this from progressing. Do you know of any more natural alternatives that I could consider? I am open to any supplements, homeopathic medication, and diet and lifestyle changes so that I can live my life as much as possible.
-Jamie in Colorado
9 - 44:00
Q: I loved your podcast with Dr Evan Brand! I learned so much from him. One of the things he touched on, but didn’t go too deep was the harmfulness of hair dye. This struck me because I realized that hair dye is basically the only product in my life that I have not gone natural with. I have a ton of gray hair, and letting them show is not an option HAHA! If I have gone all natural and organic with literally EVERYTHING else, how important is it that I give up my hair dye? Are there any ingredients or products that I should specifically avoid, and what ingredients could I look for in a healthier alternative?
-Christine in Florida
10 - 46:55
Q: I read an article about the CBD oil not being regulated, and how when you take it, you don’t know how much you are actually getting, the milligrams can vary, and even if it says 750 mg, there’s no way to know for sure. It kinda freaked me out so I quit taking it for about a week (after taking it for about four months) and I feel terrible. Do you think it’s a coincidence, or there really is something to this CBD. Is this just another fad? I am always very hesitant of Multi Level Marketing products. What’s your opinion?
-Jenna in Alexandria
11 - 49:37
Q: Hi I Love love your show! I find it very helpful and I listen to it every week. I am a 48-year-old woman, married with 2 kids, I still have regular periods except for the last 4 months. Stressful things can bring it on early or skip it. I experience severe insomnia, usually around the hours of 1 to 3:30 in the morning. It wipes me out not getting good sleep. I’m assuming it’s my hormones, I read a lot about Maca and black Cohosh, to help with sleep but I also heard that you can gain weight on it, that is something I do not want. It’s hard enough to lose weight after 40. Yet I need sleep especially with a lot of family stress (aging parents). I do suffer from low iron count and chronic fatigue, if that helps.
Thank you for taking the time reading this.
-Rebecca from Wisconsin
12 - 53:05
Q: My local tanning salon has a red light therapy chamber which I’ve tried a couple times and it feels really nice! I know that on your podcast you’ve talked about it helping with psoriasis, which is not something that I struggle with. What are some of the other benefits of red light therapy, and do you think there is really something to it? Or is it just what my mom would call another snake oil! LOL.
-Chelsea in Greenville
13 - 56:34
Q: I heard a podcast that said I should not juice because it removes the fiber, and I should be drinking smoothies. But the next thing you hear says juice juice juice, it’s the best thing for you! I know that you talk about drinking green juices and feeling really good. What is your opinion on juices vs smoothies?

Listener Questions:
Q1 - 15:47
Q: I am trying to figure out what is wrong with me (WHO ISN’T? 😊), because I feel like I haven’t been well in several months but can’t determine that cause. I thought it could be a candida issue, but I had a stool test done it looked completely normal. Should I rule out candida all together, or is there another way I could test this?
-Pam in Houston
Q2 - 18:44
Q: One of my friends (who is a health NUT) recently had her feces sampled to check her gut microbiome. This is something that I never heard of and just sounded a little extreme. I’ve heard a lot about Gut Health lately, my Instagram feed has tons of people selling products to increase my gut health. When I was growing up, my Grandma always told me to eat yogurt for a healthy stomach, but I don’t prefer dairy products and try to limit my carbs. What are some other things I could be doing/drinking/taking/eating to encourage a healthy gut, without going too overboard like my friend?
* Alyssa in Chesapeake
Q3 - 23:06
Q: I have had stomach issues for A LONG time and my Doctor recently diagnosed me with IBS. He gave me a prescription to use as needed, but I really want to take a more natural approach. What are some natural ways I can treat this, and what are some foods I should avoid and foods I should focus on eating? I know that stress is something that really plays a part in this, so I would also love any pointers you have in managing that.
* Courtney in Virginia Beach
Q4 - 26:21
Q: I have gone pretty much chemical free, except for my perfume, Marc Jacobs Daisy is my signature scent, everyone knows me by it! My hippy friends harass me saying that it doesn’t do me good to cut out the chemicals around me if I am still using this perfume. Is that true, is my perfume this harmful? I can’t find a great alternative, I have tried mixing some different essential oils and it’s not the same.
* Beth in Georgia
Q5 - 30:11
Q: I have been struggling a lot with depression lately. I’ve been talking to a counselor and it helps some, but I am still trying to figure out the root cause because I really don’t have anything going horribly wrong in my life to make me this upset. I feel like I am walking around in a fog. I am tired all the time, and you can even see it on my skin and on my face. I started reading different things online and came upon a blog that recommended a Liver Cleanse. I have never been a heavy drinker, so I am not sure that liver issues are what I am struggling with, but a lot of what I was reading about liver cleanses seemed to apply to me. Is this something you recommend? If so, what is the best protocol for a liver cleanse?
-Tiffany in Merrimack
Q6 - 36:41
Q: I suffer from Psoriasis, and I love that you taught me how to improve it with intermittent fasting. I’ve also noticed that certain foods make it worse, especially gluten and dairy. I do my best to limit these foods, and when I do, my psoriasis is so much better! But I still can’t get it to go away completely. I know that you deal with Psoriasis as well, but you haven’t talked about it as much on the podcast lately. Have you had any recent breakthroughs or found anything that is really helping you? I’d love to hear about it from your next doctor that comes on too!
* Stacey in Grand Rapids
Q7 - 42:22
Q: What has been your experience with Pepsin? I friend of mine recently offered it to me after lunch. Haha! She said that it helps a lot with digestion, but when I was reading online, I saw a lot of adverse effects like constipation and gas. It seems kinda counterintuitive! Have you tried this before?
-Maddie in Florida
Q8 - 44:37
Q: In a recent podcast you talked about things that can be endocrine disruptors, such as drinking out of a plastic cup. I am not going to lie, this episode had me a little paranoid because I started doing some research and learned that these disruptors can be found everywhere, in detergents, cans, etc. If I think about it too much, I could go crazy. What are some of the main disruptors I should be aware of and try to avoid?

Listener Questions:4
Q1 - 2:49
Q: In her last podcast, Dr. Gersh said that birth control pills can alter the gut microbiome in negative ways. There isn’t a lot of info about this online, so I am hoping she can explain it a little more. I don’t want to be on the pill, but I also do not want to be pregnant. Can you talk about healthier alternatives for birth control? What about the IUDs?
* Regina in Florida
Q2 - 8:09
Q: I've been wanting to get pregnant and I'm struggling. I'm eating clean, I'm having sex when I'm supposed to and the doctors can't figure out why I'm not getting pregnant. Can you give me any ideas of what I'm doing wrong to not get pregnant?
*Anonymous
Q3 - 11:22
Q: I wanted to let you know before I did intermittent fasting, my period was all over the place. Once I started doing intermittent fasting the first few weeks my period was still all over the place. After I did it for 30 days and consistently did intermittent fasting eating in a 6 hours window, my period is now perfect every time. I am exactly going by my app, and im getting my period when I'm supposed to!
Q4 - 14:17
Q: I consider myself to be pretty organic, I eat really clean and use a lot of all natural body products and home products. One thing I haven’t really switched is to organic tampons, mostly because they are so expensive! Do you think there is a big difference in organic tampons and regular? What kind do you recommend?
-Carmen in Lubbock, TX
Q5 - 16:51
Q: In your last podcast, you talked about taking Lysteda to help with bleeding during your period. I mentioned it to my Doctor, and he has never heard of it. Can you talk more about the use and dosage of this, is it just something I take during my period? I don’t like to take a lot of medicine, but I would consider something that’s only taken as needed a few days per month. Is this how it works?
* Courtney in South Carolina
Q6 - 19:21
Q: I had a radical hysterectomy in my early 50’s because of a cancerous cyst. At the time, my Dr didn’t want me to take any hormones because of the cancer scare. It’s been about 7-8 years since the surgery, and I haven’t found any good alternatives to use as natural hormone replacement. What would you recommend?
* -Terri in Fluvanna
Q7 - 23:31
Q: I recently was tested for BRCA and tested positive for the BRCA1 mutation. I am overwhelmed with decisions on how I should move forward, should I freeze my eggs, should I remove my breasts, have a hysterectomy…I don’t know where to begin. On top of all these big decisions I am facing, I am also thinking about the little ones like what should I be eating, and what can I be doing to make myself as healthy as possible? I want to do anything that I can, what do you recommend?
-Anonymous
Q8 - 28:03
Q: I was talking with a few close girlfriends the other night about our stress and anxiety. Several of them are on anti depressants/anti anxiety medicine but that is not something that I am ready to explore, mostly because of the side effects, and also because I hate taking medication. I focus a lot on prayer, meditation, bubble baths..all the natural stuff but I have been doing some reading and I am wondering if some or all of my anxiety could be hormonal. How do I recognize anxiety that is related to my hormones, and how can I regulate it naturally without a prescription?

Listener Questions:
Q1 - 6:00
In my 20’s and teens, my period wasn’t a problem, but I recently turned 30 and my periods have been out of this world heavy, painful, and crampy. What are some of the best natural remedies, and oils that I can use to help alleviate the symptoms?
* Jayme in Richmond
Q2 - 8:49
I am in my early 40’s and have been researching my different options as far as hormones I should be taking. Recently, I came across something online about Bio Identical Hormones, which some people seem to be arguing are a safer route to take than traditional hormones. Do you have any experience with Bio Identical Hormones, and do you recommend them to your patients? What is your opinion on the risks associated with traditional hormone replacement therapy?
-June in New York
Q3 - 10:47
Lately I’ve been hitting the worst afternoon slump around 2pm. I have been very mindful about what I eat for lunch, in hopes this would help…trying not to eat anything too heavy or with too much sugar , I even try not eating sometimes, but no matter what I do ,no matter how much I slept the night before or if I got my workout in that morning, I hit this slump. I am wondering now if it is something hormonal, because that’s the only thing I can not rule out. If it is hormonal, what could I do to help? I need my afternoons to be productive at work, and in the evenings I have activities with my kids and church stuff, so I need a solution!
-Margaret in Monterrey
Q4 - 12:55
In your podcast with Dr. Wolfson, he talked about a supplement that helps men in the sexual department, but my husband is like yours, he doesn’t need that. I on the other hand, have had a really hard time getting in the mood since I had my son about a year ago. Once we get going, I am fine, but I really struggle to get that desire or to get excited like I used to. Are there any essential oils or natural things I could try to help me get revved up?
* Anonymous
Q5 - 15:18
I can not STAND the taste of coffee but I am really jealous of everyone who gets their morning caffeine boost, and afternoon pick me up. I tried caffeine pills but they made me crazy. What is a good natural energy boost that I can drink or take?
-JoAnne in TX
Q6 - 16:50
I am 42 and have not experienced anything that I can identify as a symptom of menopause. My sister is a couple years older than me, and she is a big proponent of taking hormones. She is trying to get me to see my doctor and get started, but I don’t see the need because my period is still regular, my sex life is great (HA), and I am not experiencing any hot flashes, mood swings, etc. Do you think that I need to get ahead of the curve and start some sort of treatment, or just wait until I start noticing “the change”.
- Kerry in Missouri
Q7 - 18:08
I am a big fan of the Keto Diet- which is low carb and high fats. I LOVE how I feel when I am eating this way, and one of the things I love is that it seems to keep my period really regular…. I have PCOS and this isn’t something that I experience when I am not really following this diet. The only thing that stinks is my period is INSANELY heavy! Heavy flow, intense cramps that go down my entire thighs and into my back. I was reading online that this could be brought on by increased fats, so I am trying to be mindful of that during my period. Do you think that is the case or could it be something else? What are some foods I should focus on eating right before my period and during it that will help make it less extreme? Are there supplements I should be taking? I do NOT like to take birth control and that is not an option for me to help regulate.

Metals Test - What Kind of Metals are in YOUR System? https://metalsquiz.com/
Listener Questions:
Question 1 - 12:41
Q: Recently I went to a health spa and did a foot detox. They had this guide that said what the different things in your water meant. I had a bunch of black flecks floating in my water, which said that I had heavy metals in my body. That night, when I went home, I was flossing my teeth and without being rough or forceful, a huge piece of the metal filling fell out of my tooth! Do you think this was just a coincidence, or somehow related to my detox?
-Allison in Virginia Beach
Question 2 - 19:30
Q: I’ve been trying to detox my life, and recently have read that a lot of makeup can contain heavy metals! What are some ingredients that I should be looking for when I am reading cosmetic labels, and do you have any products and brands that you recommend?
-Lisa in NY
Question 3 -21:29
Q: I have seen several doctors and have discovered that I have autoimmune issues, but am trying to identify exactly what is going on and how to treat it. I know that my diet plays a big part of trying to treat disease naturally, and have heard some people talk about doing an elimination diet so that I can determine which foods are making me feel better, and which are making me feel works. What is the best way to approach an elimination diet- do you have any advice?
-Lauren in Alexandria
Question 4 -25:25
Q: In your podcast with Brittany Auerbach last week, you talked about replacing all the metal fillings in your mouth. When I asked my dentist about this, he said that I had to be really careful about how and who I have done this, that there are certain risks involved. Is there any real reason I should be concerned with replacing my fillings?
* Denise in Springfield
Question 5 -28:33
Q: I want to start using natural cleaning products, especially in my kitchen, for obvious reasons. But also on other surfaces that my small children come in contact with. The problem is that I’ve tried some of these products, and even made some with my Essential Oils, and my house just doesn’t feel or smell clean to me! Is this something that I need to get used to, or am I using the wrong products? What do you recommend?
-Janette in Midlothian
Question 6 - 30:35
Q: I was talking to a holistic health specialist, and he told me that Mercury was one of the most toxic substances that we are coming in to contact with. He said that even water can contain mercury! I had heard before about fish containing it as well. What are some things I can avoid, and how can I minimize my mercury exposure? Are there certain types of fish I should avoid, and certain ones that are safer than others?
-Dana in Indiana
